Built in 1888, the villa which now houses the Hotel Azteca testifies to the special history that unites Barcelonnette and the Ubaye Valley with Mexico.
Between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, many inhabitants of the valley left to try their luck across the Atlantic. Some later returned to their native region and built remarkable homes there, now known as "Mexican villas".
